On Labor Day Weekend, DJF will begin sharing the festival with the world with the launch of Jazz Planet.tv – streaming of live and taped performances, news flashes, interviews and behind-the-scenes commentary throughout the 2010 festival. The mission of the project is to showcase Detroit as an important center for American Music, to provide a unique platform for musicians, and to reacquaint the mainstream with jazz through social media outlets. 2nd Annual DJF Cruise
The 2nd annual Detroit Jazz Fest Cruise will “set sail” from the GM Wintergarden Dock at Renaissance Center (downtown Detroit) on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at 7:30 P.M. The two-hour excursion will take place aboard the stylish Ovation Yacht – a 138-foot vessel that offers a “distinctly metropolitan flair,” an outstanding slate of amenities and three fabulous decks. Detroit Premiere of LOUIS
As part of a series of five premiere performances nationwide, DJF and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will co-present LOUIS, a silent film directed by Dan Pritzker and starring Jackie Earle Haley, Shanti Lowry and Anthony Coleman. The film features live musical accompaniment by Wynton Marsalis, renowned pianist Cecile Licad and a 10-piece all-star jazz ensemble that includes Sherman Irby, Victor Goines, Marcus Printup, Ted Nash, Kurt Bacher, Vincent Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Henriquez, Ali Jackson and conductor Andy Farber. DJF announces 2010 official poster
Detroit artist Charles McGee’s painting “Prism” has been selected for the official poster of the 2010 Detroit Jazz Fest. McGee has had a distinguished career that includes hundreds of exhibitions in the United States and abroad, as well as many important contributions to Detroit’s cultural and educational community. John Clayton joins Detroit Jazz Fest Board
Grammy Award-winning bassist/composer/bandleader John Clayton was recently named to the Detroit Jazz Fest Board of Trustees. Clayton, who also served as DJF’s 2009 Artist in Residence, will serve as “National Counsel” to the Board, which works year-round to support the festival through fundraising and advocacy.
